What’s the Difference? 

While sometimes used for similar purposes, these two boats are actually very different. Unlike a wake boat, a ski boat’s engine sits in the middle of the vessel rather than at the stern to create a flatter wake and improve acceleration. While wake boat’s are pretty speedy models, their engines are specifically placed near the stern to help weigh down the vessel and increase the wake. Because of this focus on weight, a wake boat is often larger and heavier than a ski boat, and may also come with ballast systems to help weigh them down even further. 

Wakesurfing vs. Waterskiing 

A wake boat can only support waterskiing in its most basic form and isn’t the best choice for waterskiing enthusiasts. Currently, a ski boat is the only model on the market able to support trick, slalom, and jump waterskiing. However, if you’re not interested in testing your skills on more advanced versions of the sport, a wake boat will still suffice. You can also try your hand at tubing, wake surfing, or even body surfing.
