Spending a night out on your boat is a great alternative to camping that’s just as fun and entertaining as spending a night out in the wilderness. However, just like camping in the woods, spending the night on your boat will require some prep, as well as a number of important amenities and safety equipment. To be sure you have everything you need, we advise reading over our helpful tips below.

Double-Check Amenities

Before you hit open waters, be sure to double-check that you have all the items required for a comfortable stay on your boat. If you don’t have somewhere to prepare your food, make sure to have enough cold meals and clean water packed into a cooler to keep everyone full and hydrated. If your boat doesn’t have a cabin or indoor sleeping areas, you’ll not only need to ensure that you have enough bedding for everyone, but that it’s heavy enough to keep your passengers comfortably warm in cool temperatures. Finally, if your boat doesn’t have ample on-deck lighting, don't forget to bring some bright string lights or even a flood lamp to help you see in the dark.

Prep for the Worst

You never know when an emergency may arise, so it’s important to be prepared for the worst. Before you leave the shore, make sure that your first aid kit is fully stocked, and that you have a fire extinguisher, flare, and radio on board. If your passengers take any medications—whether it’s a regular prescription or an emergency epi-pen—make sure that it’s packed and kept in a waterproof bag to keep it from getting damaged. You’ll also need to check that you have enough flotation devices for everyone on your boat and inspect them for any damages that could cause them to malfunction.
